To jumpstart my blog & find my voice, I enrolled in WordPress Blogging University’s 20 Day “Writing: Finding Everyday Inspiration” course. Join me in my journey to find extraordinary in the everyday ordinary.
WordPress University Day 4 asked me to create a story from a single image. They provided four photos to choose from, and this is the one that spoke to me the most. Following the image are the words that came up when I reflected on what I saw.
Today is rose-tinted glasses, and I am the first to jump.
I loved the feeling of slick grass underfoot, the tang of rust and garden hose come together. I loved the heavy wetness of flowered cotton cooling my skin, the way my hair turned glossy and thick, the way tiny droplets clung to your wispy bangs.
We found laughter in the place between sunlight and spirals and fluffy white towels.
Sprinklers serve the dual purpose of nourishing lawns and little ones. I don’t know why I jumped, but summertime dreams made you follow and we became girls, transported. Above ground mermaids with no idea how to swim. Water is a safe space when you know you’ll land on your feet.
Today is an aquamarine beyond, and I am the first to jump.
I wished for the feeling of sand warming my toes, the chill of night falling on a star-speckled shoal. I wished for the heavy gale of wings so close I dare not look, the way my hair turned sticky and full, the way salt kissed his golden strands.
I found purpose in the place between the edges of a million ripples and saw myself reflected back.
Submersion serves the purpose of becoming one with. It is to be glossed over, under, swallowed by great pressure and depth. I swam in dark and light, I became woman mixed with water.
You’ll have to jump on your own but I know that you’ll learn how to float.
